Large Pair Chinese Ancestral Paintings

Pair of large Chinese commemorative tempera portraits. The
figures shown sitting on carved and painted chairs with
a three panel oriental screen in the background.
Exceptional detail and symbolism is shown in the decorative images
on  the formal robes the pair are wearing. The 5 toed dragons on both robes are reserved for royalty. Note the various symbols on the man's robe: The "Fu"symbol meaning the power of the emperor to judge. The Ax refers to the power of the emperor to punish.
The bottom symbol "Gui" meaning fortune and richness. There were nine classes in the emperor's court. The pheasant on the man's robe denotes he was a high second class official in the court. Also note the woman's feet are not shown, as they were considered a
very private and sensual part of her body.
Both paintings are signed by the artist in Chinese:Song Zi Qian.
Circa 1870
