Tree consisting of eight birds with glass eyes. Original
polychrome decoration. Circa 1900.
Initialed: "JRH"
Among the Pennsylvania Germans, carvings such as bird trees
were often presented as part of the ritual of courtship or
tokens of affection or esteem. Also, the carvings were a
symbol of rebirth, renewal or the arrival of Spring.
